We asked the front desk how to call Kazakhstan from the US, and got an answer that we weren’t sure of. So we looked it up online. Here’s how to make calling back and forth work.
To call Kazakhstan from the US, you need to dial the international access code of 011, followed by the country code for Kazakhstan which is 7. Then comes the region area code followed by the 7-digit phone number. The area code for Taraz is 726.
So for the Hotel Zhambyl in Taraz, the number to dial is 011-7-726-245-59-53. Then after they answer, give them the room number. Calling a cell phone in Kazakhstan would be similar, except we were told our cell’s area code is 777.
To call the US from Kazakhstan, dial 8 and then pause for a new dial tone. Once you have the new tone, dial 10-1- then the area code and phone number. We haven’t verified the instructions for calling the US yet, but we know the instructions for calling from the US to Kazakhstan work.

Hi Docter Family!
We're the O'Brien Family - just adopted a beautiful little girl from Ust-Kamenogorsk. I've been following your blog for a little while now. Just wanted to let you know - if you've got reliable internet, Skype might be a good idea to use to make calls. If you guys sign up for an account, you can make unlimited calls to the U.S. (We used the 3 month plan and it worked out great!)
If you have more questions, e-mail me at fotolabgrl @ hotmail.com (put it all together, trying to avoid spam!!) =)
Have a great day!!
Paula
