Breakthroughs

Goodbye!

Wow! Mommy has buttons!

Don't get in my way!

Many of the adoption blogs you read will talk about how the first few days, the kids are a bit more reserved and eventually, they come out of their shell. Day 5 was that day for us. Symbat taught us a lot about herself today.

We first noticed that she warmed up faster today than in previous days. Then she showed us that she can crawl, and pretty well too. She was a lot more active, crawling around, playing and throwing her toys, bouncing, and making all sorts of different faces. A few times she climbed up on Kara’s lap for hugs or had a huge smile as she walked toward daddy. The past few times when we’ve visited, it seemed as though she was pretty tired by the end. Today it was our turn to be worn out by the time our visit was over.

Today we also got to meet with the baby house psychologist and the doctor. We were able to ask questions about her history and find out about her medical state. The biggest surprise to us was that when she was born (a bit premature), she was only 1 kilogram, which is about 2.2 pounds. Now she’s 13 months old and weighs about 17 pounds. She sure has made a lot of progress in the last year! She will need to continue to develop walking skills, but the doctor says she surfs furniture such as her playpen, so we think she’s on track to walk soon.

We bought some size 4 Pampers from the Gros store here, and while they’re a bit big, they do fit. We also changed her into an outfit today which was a bit big. She’s in about size 9 months clothing. Kara got chewed out by the psychologist for having her in too little of clothing, even though the kid was practically sweating. They like to keep the kids layered up. They had her in 4 layers today, and 5 yesterday. Recommendation: it probably isn’t the best idea to buy diapers before you get to the country, as it’s practically impossible to determine what size your child will need if they’re under 18 months. Gros and other stores carry diapers so you can pick them up after you get here.

Thank you for your post. She is so cute and we love reading your blog.

You said that you had to purchase diapers? Is that just for during your bonding period each day?

Thank you.

We purchased a big pack of diapers at the request of the nannies at the baby house. We were told to bring one each day to change her in to. After the second day, we were asked to leave some at the baby house. We kept out enough for what we think we'll need for the rest of our visit, and then took in the rest of the pack for them. We were planning on donating whatever we didn't use anyway, so we just basically donated them earlier than we anticipated. They did say that the diapers would be used for Symbat.
